Our Story

The first grapes on the South Coast of NSW were grown on the foothills of Mt. Coolangatta by Alexander Berry in the mid 1800’s. It was not until the 1980’s that Greg Bishop saw the potential to re-establish vineyards on this historic site. Strongly convinced that one could grow good wine grapes in the Shoalhaven’s maritime climate, Greg Bishop planted a vineyard of Sauvignon Blanc on the eastern slopes of Mt. Coolangatta, naming the vineyard ‘Cullengatty’.

The first premium quality wine to be produced in the Shoalhaven was the ’91 Alexander Berry Chardonnay which went on to win a Gold Medal at the ’97 National Wine Show of Australia.

In the last 30 years Coolangatta has won over 2200 wine awards and 210 trophies at International, National and Regional wine shows.  Coolangatta Estate is the South Coast’s most awarded and the region’s only 5-star winery.
